Definition

Danger signs in pregnancy are abnormal symptoms or signs that may indicate a serious problem affecting the mother, baby, or both mother and baby.

Major Danger Signs in Pregnancy

1. Vaginal Bleeding

Causes of Vaginal Bleeding

  • Miscarriage
  • Ectopic Pregnancy
  • Placenta Previa
  • Placental Abruption

Dangers of Vaginal Bleeding

  • Fetal Death
  • Shock due to Severe Blood Loss

Management

  • Seek Immediate Medical Care
  • Monitor Vital Signs
  • Possible Blood Transfusion

2. Severe Abdominal Pain

Persistent or severe abdominal pain is abnormal.

Causes of Severe Abdominal Pain

  • Ectopic Pregnancy
  • Placental Abruption
  • Preterm Labour
  • Uterine Rupture

Dangers of Severe Abdominal Pain

  • Maternal Haemorrhage
  • Fetal Distress or Death

3. Severe Headache

Persistent headache that does not improve with rest.

Causes of Severe Headache

  • Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension
  • Pre-eclampsia

Symptoms of Severe Headache

  • Blurred Vision
  • Swelling of Face and Hands

Dangers of Severe Headache

  • Convulsion (Eclampsia)
  • Stroke
  • Maternal and Fetal Death

4. Swelling of Face, Hands and Feet

Mild swelling of the feet can be normal, but sudden or excessive swelling is dangerous.

Causes

  • Pre-eclampsia

Signs

  • High Blood Pressure
  • Proteinuria (Protein in Urine)
